3 WAYS TO KICK SELF-DOUBT AND THRIVE - Emma Mumford

Doubt is the killer of so many dreams. We’ve all been there when we’ve had a dream or goal in mind and then when we got to take action that voice within us stops us and tries to bring us down. Self-doubt affects so many people and is only heightened by online comparison and social media. The pressure to be successful already or have it all figured out by a certain age is heavy and a reason why so many stop altogether or never pursue their dreams. So this week I wanted to share with you my top 3 ways to kick self-doubt and thrive in life.

Inner Child Work

The voice inside is really your inner child – I see the inner critic/ego as the inner child. The voice is trying to keep us safe which it doesn’t always feel like when it’s negative and relentless. This deep down is the inner child trying to get your attention so the best way to tackle this is to start working with your inner child. I have tons of resources and tools on my podcast, YouTube, and here on this blog with how you can start to work with your inner child so make sure to check them out. Essentially, nurture your inner child like you would a small child when the niggling negative thoughts of self-doubt come up. Reassure them by saying – ‘It’s okay I’m here for you, I see you, I love you, you’re safe’. Try this for 2-3 weeks and see what results you get. When you can consistently work with the inner child and build a beautiful relationship together you’ll notice they’ll start to ease up and the negative self-doubt won’t be so strong. If however, it is persisting after trying this, it’s more than likely a limiting belief or fear underneath and something that will need to be looked at in a safe space with a coach like myself for example to be worked through effectively and properly.

Positive Affirmations

Next up, you can use the power of positive affirmations to help kick self-doubt. Affirmations are a great way to speak into existence how you want to feel and what you want to experience. The key here is picking statements that feel a 7 or above on the belief scale (1 being you don’t believe it at all and 10 being you fully believe it to be true). There is no point picking affirmations online or creating your own if they’re a 7 or below because you won’t believe them and they may even feel triggering to say. So create or pick some self-confidence affirmations that feel like a 7+, if not simplify them to something does and work with these for 21 days. You could repeat these in the mirror or save them onto your phone to repeat daily. I would only repeat them once or twice a day no need to go mad with them as once again you need to give them time to work and feel good to you too. After 21 days check in with your scores and if they’re a 9-10 then you can upgrade the statement and work up to your next affirmation and embodying self-belief.

Some example self-confidence affirmations are –

“I am kind to myself and trust in my abilities”

“I am confident and brave in pursuit of my dreams”

“It’s safe for me to believe in myself and take action”

“I believe in myself and know I am capable”

Do It Scared

Finally, do it scared Queen! Although this may take a lot of courage to do, we’re all winging it. No one ever goes into any situation in their life fully prepared and ready – we always have to take that leap of faith and trust that we’ll be carried and supported along the process. This is how you grow strength, resilience, and confidence by putting yourself in the very situations that feel nerve-wracking or scary. Doing things scared will allow you to take those opportunities and see for yourself how actually you can do it, it’s not as bad as you think and you may even smash it! Unless you try you’ll never know Queen – so what do you have to lose?
