3 WAYS TO MINDFULLY DEAL WITH STRESS - Emma Mumford

Stress can hit us at the best of times and with a lot of collective worry and events going on in the world currently it’s no surprise each of us is feeling a lack of motivation and even stress. So this week I wanted to create a blog post to help you combat stress and worry mindfully with some tools and methods I personally use and love!

Feeling stressed or worried is never fun and I feel there’s an expectation on Spiritual Queens to be calm all the time and never feel emotions of anger, worry or fear. The truth is we’re human and actually feeling stressed, angry or worried are all healthy emotions that need to be expressed not pushed down. Feeling is healing and by allowing yourself to feel your emotions they will pass through you much quicker. So here are my top tips and tools on how you can mindfully deal with stress when it crops up.

Breathwork

First of all, it’s really important to ground back into your body in moments of stress and take deep breaths. Breathing allows you to regulate your nervous system and mind and be a really quick way to feel instant relief when it all feels too much. Take some mindful moments to stop what you’re doing and close your eyes. Start taking slow deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. With each exhale set the intention or imagine that you’re releasing the stress and worry within you. Keep doing this for a few minutes and notice how your energy and emotions shift and you begin to feel calm once again. This is a great tool to turn to as our breath is our anchor and grounds us back into the present moment really quickly and effectively.

Prioritise

Next, it’s really important to make priorities in moments of stress and worry. What needs to be done today? What can be done tomorrow? Make a list and rank your to-do’s in an order of high priority and low priority – if it can wait until another day take the pressure off yourself and create the space. By creating more space and taking pressure off yourself you allow yourself to not feel so overwhelmed and feel productive with the important tasks. Also, 9 times out of 10 when you feel overwhelmed, stressed or worried it’s because you’re not prioritising the right things. I often find my self-care is the first thing to go when feeling overwhelmed so I always make it a priority to create space and focus on self-loving actions that will help me feel more supported and relaxed. So today do something for yourself which will help you to relax and feel calm.

 Triggers

Finally, very often when we feel stressed, angry or worried it’s not because the task or situation happening is causing us to feel this it’s actually because it’s triggering something up within us that’s already there lurking under the surface. So pay attention and tune in, what’s underneath the stress or anger? What’s underneath your worry? When you can journal or reflect upon this you’ll be surprised at what’s actually causing you to feel this discomfort and stress. Whether it’s a fear of failure, rejection, avoidance etc this is the Universe’s way of getting your attention and reminding you to slow down. Stress and overwhelm are a message and ask you to shine some light on these feelings coming up. Create more space in your day to regulate yourself and look at any triggers coming up as you feel these emotions. Remember to also show yourself more compassion and love as they do.
