HOW TO STAY CONNECTED DURING MERCURY RETROGRADE - Emma Mumford

Mercury Retrograde is upon us again until the 18th of October 2021. With this, I thought this week I’d share with you my top tips for staying connected during a period that can often leave us feeling disconnected in many ways. Remember Mercury is here to show us what we need to shine light upon in our life, so although it can feel disruptive at times it’s certainly not out to get you as some memes on social media would suggest!

Mercury Retrograde happens when the planet goes stationary and then appears to be moving backward. It happens three times a year and lasts 3 weeks at a time. During this time technology, travel, communication and plans can go haywire and this is what causes frustrations to happen. After the great social media blackout earlier on this week, many were suggesting Mercury Retrograde was the cause behind this. With so much disconnection happening in technology, travel and communication it’s important to stay connected to yourself and aware so you can flow through the next few weeks with ease.

Grounding

First of all, with six retrogrades happening currently the energy is certainly feeling heavy and tiring – so make sure that you are grounding into yourself, your breath and Mother Earth regularly. Whether that’s a nice Autumnal walk in nature or through meditation make sure you are taking the time to ground back into your body frequently and tune into your breathing. When Mercury knocks our plans off course or productivity it can feel disorientating or even disconnecting so by grounding regularly you come back to yourself and peace. Also make sure to cleanse any collective energy out of your energy field and home regularly with aura spray, white sage, Paulo Santo or simply with your intention. You could use an intention for example ‘I clear and transmute any collective energy or anything that’s not mine away from me now and send this up to the Universe to be transmuted into light’.

Rest

Resting is a big part of Mercury Retrograde so if you’re feeling tired, drained, or lethargic since the 27th of September then this is why! Rest is important for many reasons to help you slow down and of course for self-love too. Mercury slows us down by causing ‘chaos’ and how else would we slow down unless we felt tired? So make sure you’re taking lots of self-love time, naps and relaxing where you can. Doing this will allow whatever needs to come up to the surface to do so and give you the time and space to address it.

Listen

Finally, listening is important with Mercury Retrograde – listening to yourself, your body, and the Universe. What is this retrograde highlighting for you? Mercury is in Libra right now so if you know your astrology natal chart have a look at what house (number) Libra is in for you and this will be the theme for your retrograde. Make sure to listen to the internal dialogue coming up and anything your body needs right now. This is a great time to slow down, honour your needs and address anything you need to. To then be able to move forwards with a new sense of awareness and clarity in your life. Many people advise against signing contracts or making big decisions during a retrograde. Personally, I think trust your intuition as some big life-changing decisions may come along and if it feels like a hell YASS then why shouldn’t you go for it? If you feel unsure or it doesn’t feel quite right yet then definitely wait and see what clarity Mercury can bring for you post the 18th.
