WHY BURNOUT IS NOT A BADGE OF HONOUR

WHY BURNOUT IS NOT A BADGE OF HONOUR - Emma Mumford

If you’ve been following my health journey over the last few months then you’ll know I’ve started talking about my hormone imbalance journey and how I’ve been healing my health over the last year. What started off as a hormone imbalance coming off the contraceptive pill over a year ago now soon turned into a deep inner journey to find the source of my chronic acne and health issues. A lot of you said you wanted more updates on this as I explored further into this all –  so today I wanted to share more on what I’m working on right now and an update of how I’m getting on.

So as you can guess by the title of the blog burnout is the next stage I’m looking at. Discovering I had high prolactin (sexual hormone) after many years of back and forth at my GP I went private and then worked with an amazing consultant on the NHS who diagnosed me. I’m extremely lucky that my high prolactin isn’t prolactinoma and is most likely a side effect of chronic stress. I was told it would come down naturally over time and to stop intense workouts and only do things like walking and yoga for exercise. That in itself has helped my body massively relax and heal. I was advised that was most likely the cause of my persistent cystic acne – expect it didn’t go away. Also to note over the last year I’ve worked with a naturopathic doctor on my hormones when we thought I have PCOS which luckily again I don’t have. I’ve also worked with my nutritionist friend to supplement and support my body with nutrition and the right vitamins etc. This definitely made small improvements but nothing groundbreaking in my skin or health. So after feeling back at square one after I was signed off by my consultant I decided to go on antibiotics to clear the current bacteria infection with the acne and then investigate into my kidneys, liver, and gut health. I had already been supporting my kidneys and liver with supplements so luckily I was fine in that department – but after extensive research into gut health I discovered that burnout and chronic stress can massively throw our sensitive gut’s off and gut health can be a massive reason of ill health in many people. I don’t want to give advice on this as this is purely my own experiences and research from professionals but I’ve been taking Symprove’s 12-week programme for 4 weeks now and have seen HUGE improvements in my skin and health all by simply supporting my gut. I was on high probiotics anyway (50 billion) so if any of this is hitting home for you I would suggest trying some probiotics (20 billion or above) to give your gut some tlc.

The irony of this is that the high prolactin created by the pituitary gland (represents the third eye) is also linked to my gut (intuition) centre so can you see how this is all tying into one another now! The truth of the matter is over the last four years I’ve been experiencing chronic stress through throwing myself into work and from my previous relationship. So really the last year has been my body starting to heal and detox from the constant stress it was under. Since doing the above I’ve noticed my bloating has gone, I’ve naturally lost weight (which was caused by hormone imbalances) and I feel happier and healthier in myself. But as I go further down the rabbit hole of my health and learn so much about how our hormones and gut are so connected I’m realising more and more about burnout also.

So many people wear burnout as a badge of honor and I know I definitely threw myself into work and productivity to get through the last few years. As I slowed down at the end of last year when my body literally stopped me in my tracks I started to see the burnout and how I wasn’t balanced at all in myself or in my work/life balance. You may have seen me share this week about reducing my 1-to-1 sessions over on Instagram or you may even be one of my clients. Since Luna has come into my life I’ve seen once again how much I was doing and how I need to be realistic now with all I do and admit I can’t serve everyone in the way I used to. I’ve done 1-to-1 sessions for over four years now and in that period my platforms have grown hugely which of course is a massive reason to celebrate as you’re all incredible and I love you to pieces. That meant as I kept my prices under industry standard consistently to be accessible that the demand kept on growing every single month. Being fully booked for a whole year is again something I feel so blessed and grateful to say – but I see now how much energy it takes from me to serve my clients in this way. Not only is it an hour together, but I hold the space, support you fully, I also connect to your energy and give mine in our sessions. So trying to keep up with the sessions since launching the membership, courses, books and all the other things I do has shown me there is a better way. Everything I create is created with love and my aim is to always be accessible and affordable as spirituality is for all. But with so many offerings now I need to reduce my availability for 1-to-1’s and put my health first. I’m sorry if my decision has upset a few clients who were looking forward to working with me and of course, I feel so grateful you trust my work and trust me to be your coach – but something had to give. Have no fear though I have a VERY exciting new project launching in July which will help serve you all better and more of you now I’m unable to take on so many clients. My 1-to-1 sessions will be changing format over the coming months (my existing clients you’re all okay and I will explain this in our sessions). I know I don’t need to share this with you all but I felt it was important to show the full scope of my decision and how I am taking positive action to honour my burnout and health to set an example for others feeling the same as me. I appreciate every single one of my clients understanding and patience with this transition I honestly feel so lucky to have such caring and kind clients. So thank you I truly appreciate every single one of you.

“Too many people are seeing burnout as an achievement and a victory prize for all the hard work they put into their business, work or project. Our bodies are simply not designed to do this. If you push yourself to work to these limits you’ll pay for it more so with your health and could even be forced by the Universe not to work and rest.”

I’ve never worn a badge of honour with burnout, to be honest it’s scared me as I’ve seen close female friends also experience this heavily and not be able to work for months. They’ve felt even more exhausted when resting and have had to honour that it could take them six months to recover. I’m lucky in the sense I caught on quickly and have taken the action needed to stay on top of things thanks to my amazing team and their continuous support. Too many people are seeing burnout as an achievement and a victory prize for all the hard work they put into their business, work or project. Our bodies are simply not designed to do this. If you push yourself to work to these limits you’ll pay for it more so with your health and could even be forced by the Universe not to work and rest. The important thing is to catch yourself before you get to that point. The main signs of burnout I’ve seen in clients, friends and even in myself are – lack of motivation yet they still continue to work long hours, tired, lethargic, lack of boundaries in working hours and resting, keep pushing project after project, are constantly on the go, bloating, hormonal imbalances, gut imbalances and other physical health issues (old illnesses can flare up too). This is the time to listen to your body and nurture it – health is the real wealth and make sure you are supported in your work and home life also. Surround yourself with support and give yourself permission to take time off and fully relax. If you’re on the go constantly you need to slow down and allow yourself that rest time – even if it feels unproductive it could save you from burnout. We need to switch off and quieten our minds often so if this blog post has resonated this week please give yourself permission to rest!

Many people don’t know what to look out for and normally burnout occurs after the event not during as our bodies go into flight or fight mode and are great at concealing the damage when it needs to perform. So you may feel worse before it gets better that’s all I will add, but your amazing body needs you and your support too. We can’t do everything by ourselves and I think that’s what I’ve realised over this year’s journey among external factors, I was trying to do everything myself and still maintain that momentum even when my platforms and offerings had grown significantly over the last few years. I hate letting people down and I know many will resonate with that with their on workaholism but we have to fill our own cup first to be able to serve others in the best way possible. Giving yourself that space and rest enables you to show you from an aligned balanced which is what your colleagues, clients, family, and yourself really needs. This isn’t the end of my health journey just yet – but I feel 90% there now and will of course keep you updated as so many of you have already reached out as you’ve experienced similar.
